It's very peculiar that one of New York City's most venerable dining places was founded in the late 1800s to house sheep. The famous Tavern on the Green in Central Park was in fact built to house sheep in 1870 and wasn't converted to serve the Big Apple as a restaurant until 1934. Legendary New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia opened the restaurant with a brass key. Throughout the years, Tavern on the Green became a favorite dining spot for New York City powerbrokers, celebrities and other well-to-do clients.

Half a Million Diners Can't Be Wrong

Today, owner Warner LeRoy and Executive Chef Gary Cole offer fine dining in a wonderful environment of greenery, fine paintings, etched glass and mirrors, chandeliers and hand-cut rafters. LeRoy is also the owner of the restored Russian Tea Room, another legendary New York hotspot for fine dining. Each year, roughly a half-a-million people visit the Tavern on the Green making it one of the most popular sites in New York City. Each night in the Crystal and Chestnut Rooms, classical pianists entertain diners.

Business Lunch

For the modern visitor or business traveler, Tavern on the Green has implemented a number of innovations in pace with the information age. The business lunch crowd can take advantage of the Tavern's "Back to Business Lunch" which provides fine food and dining in under an hour, guaranteed.
